If you are on holiday near the sea or a lake, there is a good chance that you will find some fun activities that will keep you fit! Stand-up Paddle or paddleboarding has been a trend for a few years now, and here are a few tips from our ‘Fitness Breaks’ bloggers to get you in the water on holiday.

Denver

Paddle Around. Head to the original REI in downtown Denver (1416 Platte St, Denver, CO 80202) and learn to kayak at Confluence Park. For a more relaxing water excursion, rent a paddleboard and explore the numerous reservoirs surrounding Denver.

Surfs Up. City Surf Fitness, located in LoHi (2525 15th St #1d) and Uptown (2525 15th St #1d), is a surfing-inspired group workout class. Denver is the third outpost for this creative studio and the perfect place to test the waters (all the puns intended). Plus your first class is total free so you’ve got nothing to lose. Rio de Janeiro

If you stand in Praia da Barra’s sand and stare out to the sea, you will see two islands on the horizon, called Ilhas Tijucas. They are two kilometres away from the beach, and, for some time now, they have become a hot spot for paddleboard enthusiasts. The crossing, that can only be done when the sea is calm, is full of great surprises — sparkling sea with exquisite marine life and some small cliffs to jump from the islands into the water. The prize for those who complete the challenge is the amazing views to the rugged geography of the mountains seen from the sea. Since you’ll be crossing the open sea, it is wise to go with guides who know the currents and tides, like the ones at Raja Club.

Yoga Surf. Would you like to practice yoga and surfing at the same time while visiting Rio’s beaches? The Yoga Surf School offers classes every morning at Praia da Barra, near Praça do Ó. You don’t need to be a yoga or surf expert to participate. It goes like this: first, 30 minutes of basic yoga practice, where students learn breathing techniques and postures, all while visualizing surfing as a movement meditation. Then, into the water they go! Group and private classes are offered (R$ 150 per class, 1 hour and 15 minutes long), with bilingual teachers.

Take a quick look around Seattle and it’s not hard to see that the city is surrounded by water. One of the best ways to enjoy this is to rent a paddleboard from Ballard Surf (6300 Seaview Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107) and take it on the sound.

Depending on the time of year, a wetsuit may be a good idea. You will spend your time dodging boats making their way in and out of the Ballard Locks, but will be rewarded by the beautiful sight of the Olympic Mountains in the distance and the West Point lighthouse, as well as seals investigating your board by dashing back and firth underneath you in the crystal clear water.

Stockholm

Hire a kayak. There are several spots where you can hire a kayak in Stockholm, and since the city is built across several islands (much like Venice), the waterways make for an ideal way to experience the city. Although it might seem relaxing, you’ll do a real workout as you row yourself through the city! Tips: Paddle around Kungsholmen. Beautiful and 100% Stockholm!
