Best romantic beaches around the world
It doesn’t matter what time of year it is; I’d argue that a beach getaway always is romantic. Especially when the beach in question has gem-green waters, swaying palm trees, overwater bungalows, protected lagoons, and plenty of sunshine. Make that endless sunshine. Here are some of my picks for most romantic beaches in the world.
Bora Bora
Bora Bora isn’t called “The Romantic Island” for nothing; it might just be the most romantic island in the world. With gorgeous scenery and top-notch service around every corner, the island’s pristine white-sand beaches will make every couple feel like they’re on a honeymoon. You’ll find plenty of small secluded beaches all around Bora Bora, as well as popular spots like Matira Beach, which is located at the southern end of the island. Or, if you want to feel like you’re on your own private beach, book an overwater bungalow.
Fiji
Fiji is an extremely popular honeymoon destination for a reason—it’s got endless beaches. If you seek to swim, snorkel, dive, or surf, Fiji has a beach for you. And while the island has both budget and luxury accommodations, if you want to soak up some sun on the most romantic beach (and one of the more expensive), stay on Turtle Island, which is ringed with sand. You can even book your own private beach for the day! If private beaches aren’t your thing (or your budget’s thing), then Natadola Beach is another excellent spot. It also has glorious sunsets by evening.
Thailand
Thailand is known for its beaches (and its friendly locals, sacred places, and beautiful landscapes). Many of the country’s finest beaches are crawling with backpackers, which can zap any romantic potential. But never fear! There’s plenty of romance in this Southeast Asian hotspot. The beaches of Koh Samui were once backpacker havens, but in recent years have veered toward higher-end travelers. You’ll find plenty of beachside dining and quiet retreats in the city of Chaweng. Likewise, the island of Phuket also keeps you close to the action, but you can get away to secluded spots such as Kata or Nai Hark Beach.

British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are renowned as a world-class sailing destination and for their pristine beaches. Even in the Caribbean, where beaches are a dime a dozen, BVI beaches are something special. Peter Island may be your best bet for romance as it’s home to Deadman’s Beach—a mile-long, gently curved beach lined with palm trees. The island of Virgin Gorda also has no shortage of lovely beaches. There, another unique spot is The Baths—an area of giant boulders right on the sand. The boulders create plenty of pockets of privacy on the sand and in the water.
Turks and Caicos
Like BVI, Turks and Caicos is known for uncrowded, white-sand beaches. Lots of them. This small group of islands and cays isn’t as much of a tourist destination as some of the other Caribbean islands, but it was the first Caribbean island to be “discovered,” as this is where Columbus first landed in 1492. Today, these islands are perfect for a little romance and offer great luxury resort experiences. Grace Bay Beach, on Grand Turk Island, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, and often makes lists of most beautiful beaches in the world. Stroll on the powdery sand, snorkel out into the blue sea, or simply kick back and relax.
Maldives
Comprising 87 islands, the Maldives is one of the best scuba diving destinations on the planet. It’s also a perfect couples’ getaway. Many nicer resorts here feature overwater bungalows—the perfect centerpiece to any romantic vacation. The Maldives also has a unique facet to their beaches: bioluminescence. This is a blue glow in the water caused by tiny organisms that emit light as waves wash onto the shore. The effect happens on and off throughout the year and has been spotted at beaches around the islands, so ask a local when you’re there where you can see the effect.

Kauai
Hawaii is a dream destination for many. It also is pleasantly accessible, as there are no passports or visas required for U.S. citizens. While many couples may jet off to Waikiki on Oahu, the island of Kauai is a rainforested paradise that also has some lovely beaches. The Poipu area is a great bet for visitors. Located on the southern tip of the island, Poipu has the best weather on the island, as well as beaches that stretch along the coast for miles. Poipu Beach often makes top beaches lists with its gentle waves and soft sand. The sunsets from Poipu also pretty out of this world.
