An insider’s guide to eating healthy in Vancouver

If you self-identify as a healthy foodie who thrives on freshly squeezed green juices, smoothies, açai bowls and plant-based meals made with the freshest locally-source produce, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to Vancouver’s dining options. From sushi to salads and everything in between, there are heaps of options to help fuel you up. Here are a few of my top recommendations:

Heirloom Vegetarian Restaurant

+1 604-733-2231[/expediafittybreaks-widget-at-glance-viewmap]

During one of my summer visits to Vancouver prior to moving here, some friends and I visited Heirloom 4 times within the span of 3 days – I’m not joking, it’s that good. Healthy, flavourful, thoughtfully crafted dishes are what you’ll find on the menu, which also offers plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. My personal favourite picks are the miso brassica share plate and the kale slaw with tahini apple cider vinaigrette, but don’t be fooled into thinking that vegetarian means salad only. The portions are very generous, and the Pineapple Coconut Curry, veggie burger, and anything on the brunch menu will satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. Visit them online here. Address: 1509 West 12th Ave.

Nourish

The name of this beautiful café says it all – you will most certainly be nourished with great food, made from 100% organic, seasonal, whole food ingredients. Vegetables form the base of the menu with optional protein sources available, making Nourish a safe bet for groups with varying dietary needs. Salads change from week to week depending on what’s freshest at the market, and homemade soups, gourmet sandwiches, a range of breakfast options and cold pressed juices are also available. Visit them online here. Address: 3742 West 10th Ave.

The Acorn

I’d consider The Acorn to be upscale vegetarian dining, and each time I’ve visited, I’ve been blown away by the artful presentation of each dish. (Just check out their Instagram account to see what I mean.) The restaurant has won several awards including one of the World’s Top 10 Best Vegetarian Destinations by CNN, thanks to its exceptionally creative menu options created with locally sourced ingredients. Visit them online here. Address: 3995 Main St.

The Juice Truck offers more than cold-pressed, delicious juices (which are fantastic and made on the spot, by the way) – they’ve got amazing lunch and snack options, as well as a storefront with a variety of superfoods, teas and supplements too! The shop’s location is in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood (28 West 5th Ave.), but you’ll find the famous big red truck on the corner of Water and Abbott St in Gastown. Bottled juices are also carried by several stockists throughout the city. Visit them online here.

As a family-run company, the team at The Juicery not only serve visitors with innovative, interesting juice blends but also educate on the power of juicing on overall wellbeing. My top picks are the Turmeric Tonic and the Family Farm, a juice made from whatever greens are in season at their local organic farms. Visit them online here. Multiple locations.
